A guest columnist for the South Jersey Times urged the New Jersey legislature to pass legislation that allows defendants to apply for an early dismissal of frivolous SLAPP suits.
In New Jersey in 2006, a hospital sued the local Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) and its president for, among other things, testifying before a State Assembly Health Committee and regulatory agencies about poor patient care at the hospital.
New Jersey Assemblyman Raj Mukherji (D) and Sen. Joseph Lagana (D) introduced Bill A4393 in June. This legislation would provide an expedited motion to dismiss SLAPP suits in the state, which currently has no anti-SLAPP law. Modelled after the Uniform Public Expression Protection Act, the bill emphasizes the protection of free speech in all forms, including protests, publications, and more.
